Gold Membership

Benefits

Gold membership allows you the following advantages over non-gold members:

i) to see all animations (not just 8 samples).  Currently this includes all beginner moves and an example of each core intermediate moves/concepts and many more totalling at least 300.
ii) Use of the advanced filter, allowing you to search by up to 27 attributes, eg "a move that starts with a wurlitzer, is intermediate standard, sensuous and involves a wiggle"
iii) Use of quick select, letting you select by name/summary from the moves by a pull down menu.
iv) to view galleries of illustrations of the positions for all the animated moves on each jive count.
v) to know that you have given to charity.

There is a list of all the names of the moves that have been animated.

Non gold members can see eight example moves with animations and galleries.

Screen dumps of these features are shown below (with reduced display quality as they are highly compressed to load faster).

Beat Galleries

This is the clearest representation ever for describing moves.  A clear diagram for the positions of each partner on each jive count along with key points described.  Print these off and study quietly away from your computer.  Keep them as a record.  Take them to practice a new move with your favourite partner.

Animation

The ultimate in understanding the moves.  See the move work in front of your eyes, not as a blurred video where you cannot see what happens on each count and cannot retrace the moves easily.  You can just play them pause them, go step by step and have helpful tips for each count.

Filtering

The filter is the key to finding moves of the type you are looking for.  Sell below for all the attributes that you can select.

Quick select

Rather than sequentially clicking through the records or choosing a random one, you can pull down an alphabetical list of the move summaries.

Gold membership payment

How much does it cost?

Gold membership currently costs £10 for the first year and is expected to cost about half that amount for each year thereafter provided there is no gap between subscriptions.  Customers in Australia/New Zealand should send 33$, US citizens 15$, Europeans 15 euros. If the current exchange rate makes these amounts out of date, please just sent the equivalent of £10 rounded up.  Please request fee for other countries.

Where does the money go?

The money goes totally to charity.

How do I pay by cheque?

The preferred option is by cheque (especially UK residents).

Please send a cheque made out to "Jiveoholics Anonymous" for the amount indicated above (in your own currency if you are not in the UK, I pay no commission on foreign cheques), along with your email address and send it to:

C R Johnson
17 Lambs Row,
Lychpit,
Basingstoke,
Hampshire
RG24 8SL
United Kingdom

Please write your email address out twice, once in lower case and again in upper case on the back of the cheque or attached to the cheque. This is to ensure that there is no misunderstanding about your email address (feel free to let me know there is a cheque on the way by email and I will then be able to let you know if I think it has got lost or delayed).  If you provide a telephone number then, if the email address bounces, I can contact you.  This number will be destroyed once you account is activated. Normally I reply within a day of receiving payment, however please allow a week, just in case I am on holiday, although please feel free to send an email querying whether I have received it if you wish - I will always reply.

It is important that this email address is likely to remain valid for the year as a passkey will be sent to you and may need re-validating via this email address at intervals throughout the year.  For this reason it is advised that you do not offer a little-used secondary web-based address (eg hotmail) as these are automatically terminated if underused.  Your email address will not be given to any third party what so ever.

You will then be sent an email providing a pass-key (9 digit number) and instructions on how to use it.

How else can I pay?

You may pay by credit card ($15) using Paypal by clicking on the button below.  This is not automatic and you must expect to wait hopefully only a day or so until I can respond with an email containing a passkey. Click on the logo to proceed.

Further information on PayPal

Uk residents may pay by debit card (£10) using Nochex by clicking on the button below.  This is not automatic and you must expect to wait hopefully only a day or so until I can respond with an email containing a passkey.  Click on the logo to proceed (I will automatically get your email from PayPal/Nochex, so you do not need to send it or state it again).

Further information on Nochex

Unfortunately, payment directly to Visa and MasterCard servers is not economic for small businesses.

What about gift vouchers?

These are useful when you wish to give a year's gold membership away to a friend, even if you do not know their email address, or would just like to give them something with substance.  The card comes with a to and from line and instructions how to register.  Registration is slightly different and a special registration code is given on the card so the recipient can enter their own email address.  With the card in their possession, they can instantly get gold member access without delay.  Just pop in a note telling me where you would like me to send the card and envelope, either to yourself to sign the card or perhaps directly to the person.  Provided the account is activated after the 24th of the month (eg Xmas day), it will last for 13 months.  The same generosity has always applied to all requesting membership near the end of the month.

Why charge?

I have been taking text notes from jive evenings for 5 years and building up a database.  This was made available for free in 2001 and this will continue.  However the animation takes considerable time and the web servers that provide the searching facilities etc (and are fast compared to some) do not come for free.  I believe that it is fair and reasonable to make a small charge per year (less than the cost of a round of drinks!) to benefit charitable causes through my work and your enjoyment.

Terms and conditions

There are actually some quite readable terms and conditions.

Charity Policy

Introduction

I have decided to give the total proceeds to a charity of my choice.  This is Great Ormand Street Hospital Children's Charity.

Giving to charity is my choice.  I need not do it.  I am not collecting for charity.  I am simply taking all the income and donating it.  Indeed all the costs of running the website are provided free as my part of giving along with all my time.

How much goes to charity?

All (including past) income received by this site (ie gold membership subscriptions) is donated to charity.

All operating expenses will be personally provided by me. These include fees for two sites, ADSL line, graphic packages etc.  This makes the giving simple and unambiguous for your point of view (anyway - why should I not give some money to charity?!).  I don't want you to wonder how much is being deduced for operating expenses etc!

This excludes any bank fees such as foreign currently exchange commissions and fees from electronic money transfer systems such as PayPal and Nochex. These are deducted before I receive the income.

Why give to charity?

Lets be realistic, the profits would not be enough for me to retire on (!), although they could completely cover my costs.  I get as much satisfaction knowing people are prepared to pay, than actually getting the money and I believe many charities are very worth-while and it is possible to give "painlessly"!  However I have noticed a personal benefit - When my partner catches me on the computer yet again,  simply stating that "I am doing charity work" seems to have the desired effect!

So, a) you are getting a worthwhile service, b) I am giving my time in a way that I enjoy and c) charities are directly benefiting.  I therefore consider it a WIN-WIN-WIN situation.

What about tax?

For every £10 you send me, I ensure £10 gets to the charities.  In reality, I have to pay tax on my income, I then "gift-aid" all income less basic tax to the charities (who claim back basic tax).  I can claim back the difference in tax between basic tax and the amount I pay.

How do you really know it has gone to charity?

The site will make a statement of how much money has been given each year or more often if appropriate.

Anyone may come and visit me for a cup of tea and to inspect the accounts.

Anyone, who is a chartered accountant, who wishes to give their own time to inspect the accounts for free, and state that they have done so would be most appreciated.

But as I said earlier, it is my choice.  I would rather feel that you are paying and are happy for the service you receive.

  10. Why does the security word I requested not work?
  11. What happens if I wish to roam about using lots of different machines?
  12. Why does my security word not work with a different browser?

The process step by step

The registration process registers "computers", (not people) to allow gold facilities.  Your email address and a passkey allow partial registration, but this must be completed by allowing the desired computer to send a special security word (which is unique to that computer) to your email address (unique to you) which must be entered again into that computer.

Stage 1: Send the registration fee including the email address you wish the passkey to be sent to.

Stage 2: An email will be issued containing a 9 digit passkey, its expiry date along with the email address that it is registered to. You need only click on a hyperlink in the email to enter this information into your computer permanently.  However you may enter this manually from the Registration Control Centre via "Gold Membership" if you prefer.

Stage 3: You will then be alerted to the fact that you need to be sent a security word by email which will only work for the machine you are registering.  This security word is sent to the email that the passkey is registered to.  No other choice is possible.

Stage 4: Once you have received an email with a security word (this is automatic and should arrive within minutes), you only need only click on a hyperlink in the email to enter this information into your computer and you Gold membership will start.

This operation only needs to be done once, until you clear out your cookies or delete the registration (see below). So every time you visit the site, you will have all the gold facilities.

If I have cleared out my cookies, how do I re-register?

Any of the following four methods can be used, the first being the easiest:

  1. Click on the link in the most recent email containing the security word.
  2. Perform the procedure above with the original email sent to you.
  3. Enter the information manually from the email or a print-out that you have by going to the Registration Control Centre.
  4. If you used the automatic procedure (see below) to set up the web address in your favourites, simply select this.

How do I register use on another computer?

You are allowed to use your initial email containing the passkey on one other machine (eg work). Just forward the original email (or the second email containing the security word for your first machine) to your second machine and click the hyperlink to automatically enter the detailsAlternatively you can manually enter this information at the Registration Control Centre, leaving the security word field blank and click "enter details displayed". You will then be offered the option to request a security word - which you accept..  A new security word will be automatically sent to the email address supplied with your passkey.  You then have three choices:

  1. Remotely pick this email up at your second machine (eg using pop3 at hotmail) and click the hyperlink (or enter manually at the Registration Control Centre)
  2. Receive this email at your first machine and forward it and click the hyperlink on the second machine
  3. Receive the email at your first machine and enter the security word manually on the second machine.

Please note that this security word is machine dependent and will only function on the machine it was requested from.  Should your machine configuration alter, then you will be informed on the home page that your security word is no longer valid.  Just click on this message and you can easily request a new word to be automatically sent and just click on this link to enter this and your membership continues.

If you forward the registration email to another machine, be aware that some email programs break up the lines placing >>> etc at the start.  This process can corrupt the simple hyperlink registration.  If this occurs, please just go to the registration control centre and manually register.

If you allow your passkey to get into the hands of others, then they may try and request a new security word, however it can only be sent to you.  You may find this rather inconvenient.  Please let me know and I will cancel your passkey and provide another.

How do I manually enter my registration details?

This may be necessary if your email program does not correctly display a hyperlink in HTML when your passkey or security word were sent to you or you just wish to manually enter your details.  You can get access to this from the Registration Control Centre page.

How can I avoid re-registering every time I clear my cookies?

Once you have received and entered your passkey and security word you can add the main site to you "Favourites" list by clicking below.  This is special in that selecting the site from this Favourites entry will automatically enter all the registration details. This option does add a slight delay and is not recommended for any but those paranoid about cookies! You can get access to this from the Registration Control Centre page.

How do I duplicate my registrations details to the mirror site?

You should duplicate your registration details on the mirror site at www.jiveaholic.org.uk so it can be used if the main site at www.jiveoholic.org.uk is down.  You can get access to this from the Registration Control Centre page.

How do I remove registration details from this machine?

If your machine has been registered and you wish to remove it (eg an out of date registration), then click below (you can re-register at any time). Note that if you registered with the mirror site then you will need to remove your registration details from that site separately. Note also that if you created an automatic entry in favourites (see above) then your registration details is included there too. You can get access to the removal procedure from the Registration Control Centre page.

Why have such a complicated registration process?

The Internet should be free, shouldn't it?  That's a mentality that most of us have.  Whilst none of us would dream of stealing from shop, somehow the Internet seems fair game to some because its to anonymous. I'm as guilty as many.  In reality the Internet is only a medium and the information for this site has taken considerable time and money to provide.  Those who allow all their friends access for free, are putting up the cost to those who are willing to support the service.  Some sites are able to provide simple passwords.  This is great when the account is of no value in the hands of someone else, eg dating agency etc.  I have just set up the system so each time someone's passkey is used by a new computer, they have to be personally involved in the process.  Not only will this take you effort, and flag that someone is trying to use your passkey, but it will make you responsible for your passkey.  Once registered, there is no more entering in passwords etc each time you visit the site, so it shouldn't cause too much problem.

Why does my passkey not work on my second machine?

It should!  It will if you enter your email and passkey manually.  If you forwarded the email containing the passkey and clicked on the hyperlink, it is possible for there to be an error if your forwarding program truncated the lines and so corrupted the hyperlink.  It is recommended that you enter the information manually from the Gold Membership Registration Control Centre.

Why does the security word I requested not work?

The security word is machine dependent.  It does not take too kindly to features such as the screen size changing.  This has been reported to be a problem with some laptops which alter the screen size depending on whether they are connected to a decent monitor or not.  You therefore need to request a new security word for the new configuration (ie a screen change).  Fortunately, the system remembers not only the new security word but the old one, do when your machine returns to its original configuration, you will not need to enter the old security word again.

What happens if I wish to roam about using lots of different machines?

The registration process is based around people being responsible for machines.  ie it is the machine that is registered rather than the person having a password that they can use on any machine.  Unfortunately this requires users to register each machine they use, and does leave this open for other people to gain access to animations from those machines.  I had to make a decision to register machines or people and I chose the former.  This may not suit everyone, but I believe that it is the least worst solution!  Once you know your passkey, it is relatively easy to enter this and just request an email for the security word for that particular machine.  It should arrive within minutes and please feel free to request again if there is a delay.  I would also ask that you delete your registration otherwise others are benefiting from your subscription!

Why does my security word not work with a second browser?

The security word is browser specific.  This is no problem.  Just request a new security word form that browser.  When you receive the email, you may need to manually enter the word in if your system responds to clicking on hyperlinks by starting the wrong browser.
