Cookies are a site's way of storing information it needs about you when moving from page to page.  There is no other way to transfer such information.  Without this ability, any choices you make on one page cannot be read on another. Filter selection are lost, preferences such as video format, membership details are lost etc.  Additionally, they allow this information to be available on your next visit, where appropriate.

What they can do (that some people object to) is to know that you have come back.  Of course they do not indicate WHO you are (age, colour of eyes, location etc) - just that YOU have come back....after all, this is the point, that you made certain preferences on previous visits and still want them.  You can always clear your cookies after your visit, if you wish to.
