The process step by step

The registration process registers "computers", (not people) to allow gold facilities.  Your email address and a passkey allow partial registration, but this must be completed by allowing the desired computer to send a special security word (which is unique to that computer) to your email address (unique to you) which must be entered again into that computer.

Stage 1: Send the registration fee including the email address you wish the passkey to be sent to.

Stage 2: An email will be issued containing a 9 digit passkey, its expiry date along with the email address that it is registered to. You need only click on a hyperlink in the email to enter this information into your computer permanently.  However you may enter this manually from the Registration Control Centre via "Gold Membership" if you prefer.

Stage 3: You will then be alerted to the fact that you need to be sent a security word by email which will only work for the machine you are registering.  This security word is sent to the email that the passkey is registered to.  No other choice is possible.

Stage 4: Once you have received an email with a security word (this is automatic and should arrive within minutes), you only need only click on a hyperlink in the email to enter this information into your computer and you Gold membership will start. However you may enter this manually from the Registration Control Centre via "Gold Membership" if you prefer.

This operation only needs to be done once, until you clear out your cookies or delete the registration (see below). So every time you visit the site, you will have all the gold facilities.

If I have cleared out my cookies, how do I re-register?

Any of the following four methods can be used, the first being the easiest:

  1. Click on the link in the most recent email containing the security word.
  2. Perform the procedure above with the original email sent to you.
  3. Enter the information manually from the email or a print-out that you have by going to the Registration Control Centre.
  4. If you used the automatic procedure (see below) to set up the web address in your favourites, simply select this.

How do I register use on another computer?

You are allowed to use your initial email containing the passkey on one other machine (eg work). Just forward the original email (or the second email containing the security word for your first machine) to your second machine and click the hyperlink to automatically enter the detailsAlternatively you can manually enter this information at the Registration Control Centre, leaving the security word field blank and click "enter details displayed". You will then be offered the option to request a security word - which you accept..  A new security word will be automatically sent to the email address supplied with your passkey.  You then have three choices:

  1. Remotely pick this email up at your second machine (eg using pop3 at hotmail) and click the hyperlink (or enter manually at the Registration Control Centre)
  2. Receive this email at your first machine and forward it and click the hyperlink on the second machine
  3. Receive the email at your first machine and enter the security word manually on the second machine.

Please note that this security word is machine dependent and will only function on the machine it was requested from.  Should your machine configuration alter, then you will be informed on the home page that your security word is no longer valid.  Just click on this message and you can easily request a new word to be automatically sent and just click on this link to enter this and your membership continues.

If you forward the registration email to another machine, be aware that some email programs break up the lines placing >>> etc at the start.  This process can corrupt the simple hyperlink registration.  If this occurs, please just go to the registration control centre and manually register.

If you allow your passkey to get into the hands of others, then they may try and request a new security word, however it can only be sent to you.  You may find this rather inconvenient.  Please let me know and I will cancel your passkey and provide another.

How do I manually enter my registration details?

This may be necessary if your email program does not correctly display a hyperlink in HTML when your passkey or security word were sent to you or you just wish to manually enter your details.  You can get access to this from the Registration Control Centre page.

How can I avoid re-registering every time I clear my cookies?

Once you have received and entered your passkey and security word you can add the main site to you "Favourites" list by clicking below.  This is special in that selecting the site from this Favourites entry will automatically enter all the registration details. This option does add a slight delay and is not recommended for any but those paranoid about cookies! You can get access to this from the Registration Control Centre page.

How do I duplicate my registrations details to the mirror site?

You should duplicate your registration details on the mirror site at www.jiveaholic.org.uk so it can be used if the main site at www.jiveoholic.org.uk is down.  You can get access to this from the Registration Control Centre page.

How do I remove registration details from this machine?

If your machine has been registered and you wish to remove it (eg an out of date registration), then click below (you can re-register at any time). Note that if you registered with the mirror site then you will need to remove your registration details from that site separately. Note also that if you created an automatic entry in favourites (see above) then your registration details is included there too. You can get access to the removal procedure from the Registration Control Centre page.

Why have such a complicated registration process?

The Internet should be free, shouldn't it?  That's a mentality that most of us have.  Whilst none of us would dream of stealing from a shop, somehow the Internet seems fair game to some because its so anonymous. I'm as guilty as many.  In reality the Internet is only a medium and the information for this site has taken considerable time and money to provide.  Those who allow all their friends access for free are putting up the cost to those who are willing to support the service.  Some sites are able to provide simple passwords.  This is great when the account is of no value in the hands of someone else, eg dating agency etc.  It is also of value when the person would not dream of giving their password away eg a bank account.   Therefore I have set up the system so each time someone's passkey is used on a new computer, the passkey owner has to be personally involved in the process or registering that computer (requiring him to access his email).  This makes you responsible for your passkey.  No one else can register your passkey without you getting and email and giving out its contents!  Once registered, there is no more entering in passwords etc each time you visit the site, so it shouldn't cause too much problem.

Why does my passkey not work on my second machine?

You passkey should be accepted (but your security word may not be)!  It certainly will if you enter your email and passkey manually.  If you forwarded the email containing the passkey and clicked on the hyperlink, it is possible for there to be an error if your forwarding program truncated the lines and so corrupted the hyperlink.  In this case, it is recommended that you enter the information manually from the Gold Membership Registration Control Centre.

Why does the security word I requested not work?

The security word is machine dependent.  It does not take too kindly to features such as the screen size changing.  This has been reported to be a problem with some laptops which alter the screen size depending on whether they are connected to a decent monitor or not.  You therefore need to request a new security word for the new configuration (ie a screen change).  Fortunately, the system remembers not only the new security word but the previous one too, so when your machine returns to its original configuration, you will not need to enter the old security word again.

What happens if I wish to roam about using lots of different machines?

The registration process is based around people being responsible for machines.  ie it is the machine that is registered rather than the person having a password that they can use on any machine.  Unfortunately this requires users to register each machine they use, and does leave this open for other people to gain access to animations from those machines.  I had to make a decision to register machines or people and I chose the former.  This may not suit everyone, but I believe that it is the least worst solution!  Once you know your passkey, it is relatively easy to enter this and just request an email for the security word for that particular machine.  It should arrive within minutes and please feel free to request again if there is a delay.  I would also ask that you delete your registration otherwise others are benefiting from your subscription!

Why does my security word not work with a second browser?

The security word is browser specific.  This is no problem.  Just request a new security word from that browser.  When you receive the email, you may need to manually enter the word in if your system responds to clicking on hyperlinks by starting the wrong browser.

Is all this registration stuff likely to crash my machine?

No!  There is no program to install.  Your windows registry is not altered.  No information is stored on your machine except by the browser-standard cookie system. No hard-disk serial numbers or unique Pentium IDs are read.  No personal information is stored on your machine except your email address and that is lightly scrambled for your security when contacting the site.  Firewalls should not present a problem, although privacy detectors may detect your email address being uploaded during the initial registration period, but not when accessing the site normally.  The only information that is read is that available by any web site through your browser's JavaScript interpretter that would be typically used to tailor a site to best match the user's machine constraints.
